In 2007, we have been working for you on several fronts:
Visibility: The EDC worked to bring attention to eating disorders, resulting
in unprecedented coverage in newspapers, magazines, the Internet, and on the
air. As a visual reminder of the why our work matters, the EDC displayed the Eating
Disorders Memorial Quilt in Washington in May.
Comprehensive
Federal Legislation: The EDC found sponsors for the national Eating
Disorders Dream Bill. The bill will be introduced in Congress in 2008 and
will promote research, education, and treatment programs.
Treatment:
The EDC organized a groundbreaking meeting of medical directors of insurance
companies and treatment programs. Participants talked about improving access
to effective care for people with eating disorders. The EDC also identified
women and men for town hall meetings across the country, focusing attention
on barriers to treatment under existing laws.
Statistics: The EDC succeeded in getting language into the
Congressional Record (March 1, 2007), calling attention to the millions
of people who suffer, and the hundreds of people who die in part due to an
eating disorder.
Congressional Record
EDC Lobby Day: The EDC hosted a lobby day in 2007, bringing eating
disorders awareness to the nation's capital.
New Relationships: The EDC developed new relationships with
elected officials, educating members of Congress who helped us in 2007
and have pledged their support for 2008. We worked with dozens of
reporters and editors, and we welcomed several new eating disorder
groups to the Coalition.
What Makes Us Different? We focus on Washington, D.C., and the federal response to eating disorders.
We work with Congress, the federal government, the media, and others. From
our office on Capitol Hill, we call
attention to the nine million Americans struggling with anorexia, bulimia,
binge eating, and related disorders.
